The Shield – A Premier Winter Sled Dog Race

Since 1998, The Shield has been a highlight of the sled dog racing calendar in New South Wales. Held every winter, this prestigious event brings together teams of dedicated mushers and their dogs to compete in an exhilarating test of endurance, teamwork, and skill.

Race Format

The Shield features multiple race classes, ranging from 8-dog teams down to Canicross, ensuring that competitors of all levels have the opportunity to participate. However, at its core, The Shield honours the Siberian Husky’s rich heritage as a working breed. As a special tribute, the fastest Siberian Husky team in each category is awarded a dedicated prize, celebrating the breed’s incredible stamina and dedication to the sport.

Location & Safety

The race occurs within a State Forest in NSW or occasionally the ACT, offering a stunning natural backdrop for the competition. Safety is paramount, and all races are managed and facilitated by the club’s committee members and experienced volunteers. Easily identified by their bright yellow vests, these passionate individuals ensure a safe and fair racing environment for both dogs and mushers.

A Celebration of Tradition & Community

As a Siberian Husky Club, we are proud to uphold the breed’s original working abilities through events like The Shield. However, we also welcome all breeds to participate in this ancient sport, where human and canine partners share a single mission—racing together as a united team. Whether you are a seasoned musher or new to the sport, The Shield offers an unforgettable experience filled with camaraderie, competition, and the thrill of the race.
