Become a Volunteer
If you've been thinking about getting involved but don't know how, read on!
Husky Rescue relies on the time and enthusiasm of its volunteers to stop Siberian huskies throughout New South Wales being needlessly destroyed and to find each of them a permanent new home.
We can't do this without you!
There are many ways you can help, and as little as 1 hour a week can make a real difference to the lives of some special dogs in need. When you join us we'll provide you with support, guidance and practical assistance, but as with all volunteer positions we cannot pay you for your time.
We know that getting started can be daunting but we're here to help so give it a go and if you're serious about wanting to make a difference call one of our volunteers or email us at rescue@shcnsw.org.au and we'll be happy to talk you through it.
Become a Foster Carer
Taking care of homeless huskies can be one of the most rewarding, albeit challenging activities you can undertake, and we would be very happy to hear from you and answer questions about how to get involved. In the meantime here's some things you might like to know:
-
To be a foster carer you'll need to be a member of SHCNSW and agree to our Code of Ethics and Rescue Guidelines. Please email or call us for a copy.
-
You'll need to have experience with the Siberian husky breed and of course have appropriate housing and fences to look after one.
-
You'll need access to phone, email and Internet, and having a digital camera to take photos of the dogs also helps.
-
Ideally you'll have a car you can use to transport dogs as well.
Become a Re-homing Coordinator
Just as important as fostering rescue dogs is helping them avoid becoming rescues in the first place. We need volunteers who'll donate their time to help owners re-home their dogs before they end up at the pound. This is an ideal way to help if you can't take in a husky right now but still want to avoid them being dumped in pounds.
- To be a re-homing coordinator you'll need to be a member of SHNCSW and agree to our Code of Ethics and Rescue Guidelines. Please email or call us for a copy.
- You'll need to have good communication skills, as well as access to phone, email and Internet - but that's it! You don't have to foster any of the dogs you help.
Become a Transport Volunteer
Without our transport volunteers, we'd have a hard time helping any dogs. They are a vital link connecting pounds and shelters with our foster carers, and all you'll need to help is a car and a valid drivers license. Most transport is done at times that suits our volunteers so whether you have evenings, weekend or even weekdays free we'd be happy to hear from you and have your help.
Become a Fundraiser
This activity helps keep us going and we couldn't live without it. We need your help to arrange auctions, raffles, public events and participate in other fundraising activities, and we welcome your ideas for these things too. All the funds we raise are put towards the cost of helping dogs in need and never go towards paying overheads, administration or anyone's time.
Help Behind the Scenes
We need people who can help with basic administration such as updating web sites, as well as running promotions and preparing banners, posters, flyers, brochures and other important materials. If you'd like to work from home and have desktop publishing, accounting, web design, programming, legal or other office or professional skills please let us know and we'd be glad of your assistance. All you'll need is your computer, your phone - and of course your skills.
Donate to Rescue
We need collars, leashes, ID tags, towels, blankets, worming and other medications (non-expired), shampoos, dog beds, kennels, crates, toys and training tools. Whether you're an individual or a business, if you have any of these you can donate please email rescue@shcnsw.org.au to organise a drop-off.
If you'd like to become a sponsor of rescue too, please email Andrew Peterson at rescue@shcnsw.org.au for more information.
And last but by no means least we are grateful to everyone who has contributed financially to rescue - your cash donations and generous support of our fundraising efforts have been heartwarming and sincerely appreciated. With your assistance we've changed the lives of hundreds of dogs - and their adopters - for the better, and for that both dogs and humans thank you. If you would like to donate to a rescue volunteer please email rescue@shcnsw.org.au for a fact sheet.
