| Comments: | There are a couple of different time frames I've heard about shedding. Some say twice a year at 3 weeks at a time. Others say twice a year at 3 months at a time. Could someone please clarify as it is a big difference. Thanks.
Also I've heard that if a female siberian husky is de-sexed that the shedding is greatly reduced.
Have you any knowledge of this thanks as I'm interested in getting a females siberian.
The shedding is a big part of my decision making on this breed.
Thankyou.
[Ed: Shedding in dogs of any breed is influenced by lots of factors, not just season. The combination of breed, coat type, average daily temperature, indoor/outdoor lifestyle, the dog's general health, nutrition, any sudden change of diet, overall cleanliness, hormones and pregnancy / lactation will all affect the frequency. Undesexed dogs and younger dogs tend to have more defined periods of shedding lasting occurring every 6-9 months and lasting around 3 weeks, whereas desexed dogs and older dogs tend to shed more continuously although they do still blow their coat periodically. Desexing a dog does not noticeably change the overall amount of fur they will lose each year. Some owners may be tempted to keep their dogs undesexed to manage shedding, but the health benefits of desexing (especially in reducing the risk of cancer) generally outweigh other benefits.
The only real cure for shedding is regular brushing, a very good vacuum cleaner and floors that are easily swept - plus a tolerance for having stray fur around the house. Strong shedding is a definite and very obvious feature of the Siberian husky breed, so we would only recommend huskies to people who don't mind fur on the floor ...or on furniture, on their clothes, in their coffee, between their teeth... :) ]

| Comments: | Hi SHCNSW, just a quick one. Is it alright to keep Siberian Husky in an apartment? Will they feel stress? As I heard that you need a big area to keep a dog like Siberian Husky. Much appreciate it.
Cheers.
[Ed: Hi Eric, huskies normally don't do well at all in apartments however a few very dedicated owners have at times been able to make it work. Huskies are a working breed and their energy and intelligence often gets turned to destruction if bored. Many fret at spending time alone if they are not used to it too. Huskies need proper diet, exercise and comprehensive behavioural enrichment to thrive. While apartments are fine for sleeping, huskies are best not thought of as a purely indoor dog. Talk to a qualified behavioural trainer for tips on keeping dogs happy or check out RSPCA's guide on pets in apartments.] |

| Comments: | Currently looking for a husky, want a dog fair size, furry you know. So I've read does not do bad in hot climate. I'm in Queensland near the top, gets a bit hot but there's plenty of popup sprinklers for them to play around in hehe. Anyone know a place to get one? Cheers...
[Ed: Hi Brendon, huskies will cope with hot weather climates fine if offered cool 100% shade (i.e. not just a tin roof) with resting places, plenty of water to wade in and to drink, and they are only exercised early morning or in the evening. We recommend all owners do their breed research, and you can talk to Dogs Queensland to locate breeders near you, or go to your local pound, RSPCA or AWL shelter to find out about huskies for adoption.] |

| Comments: | Dear Husky Club of NSW,
I very much enjoy reading your web site and you have a great collection of information and fun photos. I have been doing research for a couple of years now to see what needs and requirements that huskies need but the only problem I now face is the heat. I have read that Siberian huskies are adaptable to weather and are ok as long as they have a lot of shade, water, a cool place to dig, not over fed. But I live in country NSW where the summers can get to 42-44 degrees Celsius and I was wondering even if the husky has heaps of shade, water, a bathtub to swim in, is well looked after and let inside with the air conditioner, is the weather still too hot to have a Husky here?
Thanks from Sarah
[Ed: Hi Sarah, thanks for writing. Extreme weather conditions are a question of comfort as well as safety, because heatstroke is a dangerous condition. 100% shade, plenty of water (for wading and for drinking), good ventilation, access to indoors, plus avoiding exertion and other stresses on hot days is important. If these things are done there is no reason why huskies cannot live in hot climates. Read more at http://kb.rspca.org.au and search for "hot weather" and "heatstroke".]

I am keen find some hints to help her through this. We also are grieving the loss of Grif, but, the sight of this lovely 12 year old mourning him is heart wrenching.
[Dear Averil, we are so sorry to hear of your loss, there is no question it is one of the most difficult times to go through. Talk to your vet and ask for a referral to a veterinary behaviourist from Delta Society for advice as there are many things that can be done to help. Try this article as well. - Ed] |

| Comments: | I really enjoyed reading your "PRO's & CONS" type page with general information - very well written! I have had Syba now for less than 3 months (he's 4.5 months & completely adorable). I have been looking only recently into clubs as he's had his last shots now - i am so impressed by the breed and have always been a cat person! WOW! The most amazing creature on the planet to share time and energy with I haven't stopped being stunned (good & bad - but not anywhere near as bad as I had been told)
I am still on search for a local club to me, i don't mind the dog parks but if they can specialise so we can interact with his own breed - just till we get him a cute little girl to be friends with that is!
It's great to see all your beautiful pictures too, thanks for the insight ;-) |

| Comments: | Hello fellow husky lovers,
I have a beautiful 5 year old siberian husky girl Angel who came from a breeder out bargo way called [name withheld]. I just wanted to know if this was a common problem or maybe a possibility of imbreeding but my girl has had to have a very expensive surgery recently called TPLO surgery which is the result of her tearing both ac ligiments in her back legs. The vet who was amazing at parramtta is the only surgeon in australia who performs this amazing surgery by where he cuts through the bone and resets the leg with a titanium plate to replace the need for the ac ligiment said that he back legs were very straight almost hyperexteneded when they should of been quite bent and from her active nature always running with me that like a football injury the ac ligiment just wore and snapped.
Is this normal is a husky and has anyone else epxeienced this or was I just the unlicky one.
The surgery was extrememly expensive but of course nothing is too much for my girl and she has made an amaing recovery and is running again without any problems.

| Comments: | My very recent guestbook comment has not been posted. Strange, but that's ok. Then it must be the case where only 'pretty dogs' can have their 'pretty' say on 'pretty subjects'. Philosophy is my only subject.
It therefor cannont be just another 'show' or 'race', but an internet 'display'. That's ok too.
Hands up those who are in it for the Money, the Power, the Importance, or the Glory?
No hands?
Then I fully expect that the Husky rehoming people will immediately be inundated with calls.
Most will exclaim "it's for the breed!", but there is a glass door.
A celebrated musher once stated he thought it was all his training that once won him three Iditarods, all with the same leader. And Phar Lap's trainer thought the same. The truth is, anyone could have trained those gifted specific individuals.
"The more you know... the more you KNOW you don't know", and make no mistake I sure DON'T claim to know much. That is for certain.
Sometimes second IS better.
Thank you for your audience.

| Comments: | Yeah. Pittock. Shay & Minka. Please maintain the integrity of the TRUE pedigree of these dogs. That is PLEASE correct the current pedigree to read accurately. I may be well out of dogs, but as I was the owner and breeder of this pair I find what is currently listed as the sire and dams of both of these dogs offensive. Of 'Arcticmoon Shay by Indy D'... his daddy was 'Huskyhaus Indy D of Kiska M', a dog that led every step of the way in the 1000 mile Iditarod sled dog race for Terry Hinesley.
I was drinking once with a Phisio deep in Canada who disliked Purebreeds. When I asked him why, he replied "I'm looking for a good head (attitude), good feet and good feeders....let alone a recipe!". He was right. I have nothing against purebreds. Wonder what Doc Lombard would have thought of that when the Siberian society didn't get the gist of his famous speech.
At least get the pedigrees straight.
Have a nice day.

| Comments: | I have just been given a 6 month old female Siberian Husky, I've been told that she is prue bred, is there any way to confirm this and what are the requirements for joining a club and provision of obediance training?
[Hi Allan, not all purebred dogs are registered with ANKC however it may be possible to establish pedigree using ANKC registration papers if you are in touch with the breeder. It is sometimes possible to search by microchip number as well. Contact Dogs NSW www.dogsnsw.org.au for more information. Membership of SHCNSW is open to anyone interested in the promotion and welfare of Siberian huskies, you don't need to own a husky to join. The training sessions currently offered by SHCNSW are available free to all owners, club membership is not required. | Comments: | I have three lovely Siberian huskies and they never run away, they are obiedent and are great to have. They love swimming, running and playing. They are very special to me and me to them, the only time they are on a lead is when we take them down the river then we let them go so as they can swim.
So why is it that people say not to let them go, as I have had no trouble with them.
[Hi Dian, every Siberian like every owner is different and unique, and it's great you can have yours off leash in a number of areas. It's far more common for huskies to run if let free , so we still always recommend they remain on leash - both for their safety and because Companion Animals Act actually requires it in NSW. Best wishes with your sibes! - Ed] |

| Comments: | I've adopted two wonderful dogs (Koda) and his mate (Jett) from SHCNSW. It's been just over a month and I've to tell that I'm loving it :)
They are my first dogs and they are part of a "diverse" family, 2 kids, 7 ring necks, 1 lorikete, 1 cat and a fish tank... I've been selected by the original owners to have her dogs and it was quite surprising as I've been told that homes with "pocket pets are not the 'perfect' ones for huskies" but we are having a very good time. It's challenging and time consuming but it's wonderful.
