A puppy mill or puppy farm is a large dog breeding facility created to mass produce puppies for profit.

Likened to battery hens, the breeding dogs are kept in cages or pens for their entire life with the sole purpose of producing puppies for the pet shop, internet and overseas markets.

Pet shops require a constant supply of cute, young puppies and individual shops can take more than 20 a week. Multiply that by the number of pet shops found in shopping centres throughout Australia and you have the perfect distribution network for an industry producing hundreds of puppies with little concern paid to quality, health or temperament.

 Stop Puppy Mills

Hundreds of thousands of puppies are mass-bred each year for sale in pet shops or through web sites and newspaper classifieds. Help the HSUS spread the word about puppy mills with two freely downloadable fliers, "How to Find a Good Dog Breeder" and "How to Buy a Puppy"

SNOOK

In Foster Care

Meet Snook, a gorgeous 3 ½ year old purebred male husky who was surrendered to us by his owners after a change in circumstances left them unable to provide him with a home.

Snook is a great looking boy and has the personality to match, he is one of the sweetest huskies I have had the pleasure of meeting. He has been a much loved family pet and it really shows.

Snook is very much a ‘people’ husky, he will choose your affections over food, toys or other dogs. He has had the companionship of another dog growing up and is very well mannered around them. This being said Snook would be fine going to a home where he was an only dog provided you have the time to give him the attention he deserves. Snook loves his walks and is an active young man, he will be looking for a home where he can be included as a valued member of your family and be included in your lifestyle. It is unsure of his house-training status as he has been raised as an out-door dog, but it would be nice to see him in a home where he could at least be occasionally let in.

This young husky is going to require some training, he is an extremely friendly boy however he will jump up on you when excited and does have the tendency to soft mouth. Both these traits can be managed by training and husky rescue can provide you with support and resource materials to help you on your way. He has been raised with young children and is great with them, but do keep in mind he may be a little boisterous for very young children.

He has been vet checked and his eyes checked by a veterinarian as it was suspected he might have a slight vision problem, where small treats on the ground could not be found by sight. Upon thrower examination by our veterinarian no issue with his eyes was detected.

Snook is going to require 6 foot fencing to keep him safe, and he does exhibit keen interest with smaller animals which means under no circumstances will he be re-homed where small pets are involved, this includes cats, small dogs, chickens, rabbits etc. As mentioned above he is great with other dogs, and any medium sized dog upwards he will be fine with.

Snook is currently located in Goulburn NSW and he comes to you vet-checked, desexed, vaccinated, wormed, micro-chipped and lifetime registered. He  is available immediately for a donation of $250 to husky rescue and will go on a 4 week trial period with his new home to make sure he is the right dog for you.

SIMBA

In Foster Care

Simba - Such a gentle man and so in need

AVAILABLE NOW - 26 January 2012
Simba - born on 22 November 2001 and abandoned by his owners for being "too old to be bothered with" - this purebred male Siberian Husky needs a new home. He is pale red and white and has brown eyes. He is of medium height and slim build for a Husky.

Simba came to us from the Griffith (NSW) Council Dog Pound after his owners surrendered him to his fate. We know nothing about him, but can tell you that he is friendly, gets on well with dogs and people, loves his cuddles and pats, and knows basic obedience exercises. He is good indoors, and settles quietly, as is to be expected from a mature aged Husky.

Simba is in good health, and acts younger than his years. He has lost weight due to the stress of spending time in a Pound after the people he knew left him there. His new home should not have very young dogs who may annoy him, nor energetic and excitable younger children.

Gentle daily exercise, a mat in a quiet corner of your family room, and a fully fenced and secure yard are essential when considering adding this very needy Husky to your family. He loves all people and interacts positively with everyone he meets. He will repay your kindness with some years of quiet companionship and as your walking partner.

Simba comes neutered, vaccinated and microchipped for a small donation to Husky Rescue

Currently located near Canberra, your enquiries are welcome.
Simba goes on a 4 week trial initially to see how he settles in with your family.

 SHADOW

 In Foster Care

Shadow   - She sure needs a new home

AVAILABLE NOW   -  7  January 2012

Shadow - born on 22 September 2010 and just 15 months old   -  this purebred female Siberian Husky needs a new home. She is black and white and has brown eyes.  She is tall and lean for a Husky.

We picked up Shadow from her owners and brought her here for fostering while she waits for a new home.  Sadly her owner is not well enough or strong enough to cope with a Husky and is facing ongoing medical treatment, after owning her from a young puppy.

We have a complete history and can tell you that she is friendly, gets on well with dogs and people, loves her cuddles and pats, and knows basic obedience exercises.  She is good indoors, though a bit excited initially, as is to be expected with a young adult Husky.

Shadow is fabulous with children of all ages, having lived with 3 children ranging from 2 years to 12 years old in her home.

Adequate daily exercise, attendance at dog obedience training classes, and a fully fenced and secure yard are essential when considering adding this lively Husky to your family.  She loves all people and interacts positively with everyone she meets.

Shadow was bred in western Sydney by a backyard breeder who mated any 2 dogs together without considering their compatibility or doing any health checks on the parents and other relatives.  She was born with a congenital deformity in both front legs, and they are warped and turn outwards.  She is not in any pain and her mobility is not affected at all.  However, there could be an increased chance of arthritis developing in badly aligned joints as she ages.

Shadow comes desexed, vaccinated and microchipped for a donation of $ 150

Currently located near Canberra, your enquiries are welcome.

Shadow goes on a 4 week trial initially to see how she settles in with your family.

SASHA

  Private Re-homing

Sasha is a wonderfully affectionate 5 1/2 year old female Siberian Husky. Her brilliant blue eyes and soft grey and white coat ensure she gets attention wherever she goes. She has a friendly, outgoing nature, and gets along well with people and dogs alike. She is de-sexed, vaccinated, all-wormed and heart wormed, flea and tick treated, micro-chipped and lifetime registered.

Rescued 9 months ago when she was about to be surrendered to the pound by a family who no longer wished to care for such an energetic dog, she has since been living with her current owner and another dog in a big yard with a secure fence, and enjoying two good walks a day. Her owner reluctantly needs to find her a new home due to a job that will involve moving interstate and overseas regularly.

Her happy nature and boundless enthusiasm make Sasha a pleasure to have around. She has never shown any aggression towards people, is gentle with children, and doesn't jump up or bark. She does get excited, especially before a walk or dinner, but she has learned to sit, wait, drop, come and heel, and will walk well on a lead with occasional correction. However, she cannot be let off the lead outside, as she can be very challenging to retrieve once she tastes freedom! She particularly likes to be taken for a jog on the lead to burn off her excess energy.

Sasha needs a home with a very secure yard (6 foot solid wooden paling or colourbond fencing and gates with the fences underpinned to stop her digging out) as she loves to try and dig her way out. She would do best in an only dog home however if living with other dogs she should always be fed separately, as she has fought with other dogs over food and bones. She loves meeting other dogs, and gets along well with her current female companion, a 9-year-old border collie cross. However she does have a dominant personality and may clash with another dominant dog. She also likes to chase rabbits and chickens so would not suit a house with small animals or cats.

Although Sasha hasn't had much training in the past, she has learned quickly and with ongoing training will flourish. She was previously a purely outdoor dog, but these days she sleeps inside and has become house trained. More than anything she loves to be close to her family, and enjoys spending time indoors or outdoors, so long as somebody is nearby. She doesn't howl or fret when left alone, but can get bored and start to dig when left for long periods.

Sasha is located in Gerringong (2.5 hrs south of Sydney) and is available immediately for a $250 donation to Husky Rescue. Her owner will need to find her a home by mid February 2012.

FROSTY

Private Re-homing

Frosty is a young desexed male Siberian Husky who is looking for a new home.  At approximately 15months old he needs a home where he can enjoy lots of attention and time with his new family inside as well as having space to run around outside and burn off some of his excitable husky energy. He is microchipped and registered, vaccinated, all-wormed and heart wormed. He has a  grey and white coat and has one brown and one blue eye. A recent move to a property means he has had to be kennelled when his owners aren’t home which isn’t an ideal situation for him.

Frosty’s owners had rescued him from a pound last year and have found him to be very people friendly and he seems to get along well with dogs of a similar size, especially females. He loves pats and cuddles and when inside follows you are around and would probably sit on your lap if allowed. He is generally quite calm but he does like to chase birds and other small animals so his new home would need to have no small pets (not even small dogs). He is still quite young and can be puppyish at times, he has enjoyed playing with chasing and tug of war with other dogs however if there is another dog in his new home proper introductions would need to be done initially to ensure they get off on the right foot.

There haven’t been any incidences of biting or aggression and no puppy mouthing. He hasn’t shown an inclination to be destructive or to dig.  Frosty hasn’t spent a lot of time indoors but hasn’t had any accidents when he was indoors so it is unknown how house trained he is. Generally dogs do show a preference for toileting outdoors and if there are any accidents this can be taught.

As with most huskies Frosty can be a bit of an escape artist so his new home would need to have at least 6 foot, secure fencing and gates-wooden paling or colourbond. He needs a home where he isn’t left alone for more than 7 hours a day and where his owners will take the time to walk him daily and to work with a trainer to train him, to teach him to enjoy playing with toys and help enrich his environment so that if he is left alone he doesn’t get too bored. Husky Rescue would like to speak to Frostys new owners to help achieve these goals. He would do best in a home a home without small children as he sometimes jumps up and knocks them over.

Frosty is located near Orange and is available immediately for a $200 donation to Husky Rescue.

BOB

Private Re-homing

**ON TRIAL IN A NEW HOME 12.01.2012**

Bob is an eleven year old desexed male Siberian husky.  He is a faun and white Siberian husky and is a very healthy, spritely eleven year old. He has hazel coloured eyes and weighs 23kg.  Bob is desexed, vaccinated, heart wormed, all wormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped and registered. Bobs owners are moving interstate for work and are unable to find suitable accommodation for him.

Bob has been with his current owners for eight years and they adopted him from his first owner who could no longer care for him due to an illness in the family.  Bob has been a  gentle and much loved member of the family which includes their two sons who are ten and three. Bob has a lovely temperament towards people and children. He is relaxed and enjoys attention.

It is our understanding that Bob was treated poorly by the partner of his first owner.  He attended Puppy preschool with his original owner and can obey basic commands, e.g.come (as long as he is not out of his yard), sit, stay, lie down, give me your paw. Bob enjoys socialising with other dogs. He loves walks and likes to talk (howl) when he is ready for a walk and his dinner.  He is currently an outdoor dog and sleeps in his kennel but he has been an indoor dog in the past. Bob has never bitten anyone and has never been declared a dangerous or nuisance dog. He does not jump up or bark.

Bob has a fear of storms and cap guns.  If Bob is tied up during a storm and left unaccompanied he will dig and chew on whatever is within reach. If he is not restrained and left alone he will escape.  If Bob is allowed in the house and has the company of people he is generally much calmer during storms.  Husky Rescue would like to speak to Bobs new owners to help with managing his fear of storms. He currently has medication to help sedate him as needed and it is likely that his new owners will need to continue to do this at times.

Bob needs at least one walk a day but really enjoys two or three. Bob loves a good run and can be challenging to recall and return home if he is off lead.

We would like to re home Bob to a single person, couple or family who will love him and empathise with his fear of storms.  He will require a fully fenced yard with a minimum fence height of 6 foot , and regular walks. His new home would need to have no cats, small dogs or other small pets.

Bob is located in Glen Innes and is available immediately for a $100 donation to Husky Rescue, we need to find a home for Bob by the 13th of January 2012 at the latest.

To find out more about Bob or to arrange to meet him please contact:

 YURI

Private Re-homing

Yuri is a 4 year old desexed Siberian Husky male. He is in need of a new home as his owner recently had some surgery and is no longer able to exercise him. He has a lovely grey and white coat and gorgeous blue eyes and has a very nice, friendly nature. He is desexed, vaccinated, all-wormed and heart wormed, microchipped and registered.

He was rescued from the RSPCA 3 years ago when his original owners got a new puppy and didn’t have room for both dogs. He currently is an “only dog” but does play nicely with other dogs and hasn’t been seen to be aggressive or to fight with them. He is currently an outdoor dog and doesn’t dig or try to escape, he doesn’t howl or fret when left alone and hasn’t chewed or destroyed things.

He does know a few commands but is inconsistent with them and hasn’t had any formal training. Both his new owners and Yuri would benefit from some classes and continued training at home. He has been an outdoor dog and so it is unknown whether he would be reliably house trained however dogs do show a preference for toileting on grass and if he isn’t great with it this is easily remedied with training, Husky Rescue are happy to help with this. Yuri is friendly with almost everyone but has been a bit hesitant on meeting a few people in the past so his adopters will be offered help on how to keep up his socialisation.

As with all huskies Yuri would need secure 6 foot gates and fences (solid wood paling or colourbond) to keep him safe and he should never be let off leash in an unfenced, or smaller fenced, area. His adopters would need to be committed to exercising him daily and to implementing a training program for him. His new home would need to have no small pets (birds, cats, rabbits, or small dogs) as huskies have a high prey drive. Previous experience with huskies preferred.

Yuri is located in Armidale and is available immediately for a $250 donation to Husky Rescue. He goes to his new home on a four week trial period initially to ensure that he settles in well.

DIESEL

Private Re-homing

Meet Diesel, a happy, energetic 8 month old desexed male Siberian Husky cross. He is a delightful young dog who is in need of a new home due to a change in his family situation. Diesel is vaccinated, all-wormed and heart wormed, flea and tick treated, microchipped and registered and ready to go to his new home immediately. He has a tri-colour coat of sable, grey and white with one blue and one brown eye (this is quite normal for the breed and doesn’t affect his vision at all). While he is believed to be a border collie cross he predominantly looks like a husky.

Diesel is friendly and eager to please and has attended both puppy preschool and junior puppy school. He knows the commands sit, drop, stay, come, and shake and happily demonstrated his knowledge of these commands to our rescue volunteers. He will do really well in a home that continues the great training work his owners have already done with him. He will walk on a loose lead at times and pulls lightly at other times. As with all huskies Diesel should never be let off leash in an area that is not securely fenced.

He is not food aggressive, is not a chronic escaper, doesn’t dig and has a soft mouth with no inclination to bite at all. He doesn’t howl or fret when left alone and doesn’t bark or growl at people. He is a little unsure of very small dogs.

As with most huskies Diesel needs to go to a home with no small pets (cats, birds etc) and no small dogs. He would do great with dogs of a similar or larger size-he loves other dogs! He would need secure 6 foot fencing and gates to keep him safe (colourbond or solid wooden paling). He hasn’t been destructive and has only chewed something when left alone for a long period with no toys or stimulation. His new owners would need to be committed to giving him a really good walk (or two) each day regardless of the weather to help burn off some of his youthful energy. They would also need to allow him some time indoors to be with the family. He can sleep either indoors or out and is house trained.

Diesel is located in Beaumont Hills (near Kellyville in Sydney) and is available immediately for a $300 donation to Husky Rescue. He will be a delightful addition to the right home. Diesel goes to his new home on a 4 week trial initially to ensure that he settles in well.
