A puppy mill or puppy farm is a large dog breeding facility created to mass produce puppies for profit.

Likened to battery hens, the breeding dogs are kept in cages or pens for their entire life with the sole purpose of producing puppies for the pet shop, internet and overseas markets.

Pet shops require a constant supply of cute, young puppies and individual shops can take more than 20 a week. Multiply that by the number of pet shops found in shopping centres throughout Australia and you have the perfect distribution network for an industry producing hundreds of puppies with little concern paid to quality, health or temperament.

Stop Puppy Mills

Hundreds of thousands of puppies are mass-bred each year for sale in pet shops or through web sites and newspaper classifieds. Help the HSUS spread the word about puppy mills with two freely downloadable fliers, "How to Find a Good Dog Breeder" and "How to Buy a Puppy"

Huskies for Adoption

See below for a list of dogs currently

looking for homes

Please note that ages listed may be an estimate.

 Jed

Jed is a 7mth old male Bi-eyed pure breed siberian husky who came into foster care after his owner had to leave the country due to issues with her Visa. Jed was entrusted to the Husky Rescue carers to find him the very best of homes. He has been a well cared for and a much loved pet and his owner was extremely sad to see him go. Only the best of homes will do for this boy!

Jed would best ideally suited to someone who has another dog for him to play with and learn from. He will need consistent daily exercise so that he can burn off puppy energy.  Jed has had basic puppy training (sit, come, stay) but would benefit from attending some adult classes for more socialisation and to refresh his manners.

Even though Jed came from a one dog household he is good with both Male and Female dogs and shows no signs of aggression at all. He loves is cuddles and will hang around his human companions legs wanting cuddles and pats. Jed is used to living indoors and is formally housetrained by his previous owners

Jed will be available for adoption once all his vet work is done for $350. He will be microchipped, vaccinated, desexed, wormed and registered prior to being released for sale.

Jed is being fostered at Douglas Park south of Sydney.

Please note this is NOT a pet shop, it's not first in, first served. The most appropriate home will be selected for Jed. You must have returned the questionnaire to us to be considered for adoption.

Casper

Casper is a pure white male Husky with mischievious sparkling brown
eyes. A soft coat which calls out to be patted and a friendly nature
towards people and other dogs are other appealing aspects about him.

Born 12 October 2007 (makes him a bit over 2 years old), he is small
sized for a male Husky but way too thin - every rib can be felt - a
legacy of weeks spent fretting in the Dog Pound.

His appetite is appropriate and healthy and he is being fed smaller
meals twice a day to help him return to top condition - and to have a
layer of meat across his ribs - raw meaty bones like chicken wings or
lamb necks are his preferred diet, with quality branded dry kibble or
biscuits.

Casper is a young, untrained Husky who loves to run and jump -
behaviours which will endear him to those looking for a jogging
companion, but which in reality led to him ending up in a Council Dog
Pound with no owner and no new home in sight before we reprieved him
from "no future".

At this age, Casper is eager for obedience training, willing to learn
and over the puppy destructive stage of life. However he has not had any
training or guidance in living in a family with people so pulls hard
whenever he is taken for walks.

He is too strong for children to walk,
but is gentle and playful around them (under supervision of course). An
adult in the home needs to be committed to daily exercise - 2 walks of
at least 30 minutes each.

He is only available to a home with a very secure yard and strong high
fences and where someone is home most of the time at least initially to
keep him company and to supervise his behaviour as well as to reinforce
with food treats the obedience lessons learned in class.

A commitment to weekly dog obedience training classes is essential as
daily work can bring out Casper's potential to become a loving and
friendly companion for 12 or so years.

Casper is vaccinated, neutered, micro-chipped, lifetime registered, and
is in good health. He is located near Canberra and is available for $250
which will be used to cover his rescue and care costs, and help re-home
other dogs in need.

To find out more about him or to arrange a time to meet him please call:

Casper goes on a 4 week trial initially to see how he settles in with
your family

Gabbie

This is the lovely Gabbie. She is a pure white Siberian Husky with warm brown eyes. She is a lean tall girl with energy to burn. Gabbie was microchipped but no owner details were registered against her number. Her owners were not contactable and no one came forward to claim her. Gabbie was in a Sydney Pound and had numerous families put their name down to adopt to her. When the time came for her to be collected none of the new homes showed up so she has come in foster care with Husky Rescue.

Gabbie's age is estimated to be around 12-18mths and she is still very playfull and puppylike in her behaviour and antics towards other dogs. She gets on well with other dogs both male and female and would best suit a home with another dog for company due to her high energy levels.

Gabbie in the past appears to have been shown very little leadership and will need an owner who will participate in basic obedience training with her. At present she knows how to sit but is easily distracted and can be a little jumpy at times.

Gabbie will need regular exercise as well as time with her human family inside or she may turn destructive. This is a common reason why so many huskies of this age turn up in various pounds.

Gabbie will be available for the adoption fee of $350 which covers vaccinations, desexing, worming and lifetime registration.

She is located at Douglas Park NSW

Tia

*** TIA IS ON TRIAL IN A NEW HOME ***

This is the lovely Tia, She is approx 18-24mths old and was taken in foster care after arriving in a Sydney pound where she was not collected by her owners. She was not microchipped so there was no way of contacting the family that lost her. As no one came forward to collect her and she was not adopted directly from the the pound Husky Rescue stepped in and saved her life.

Tia is a very large girl and is either a pure breed husky or possibly a Husky x Malamute. She does however show the main characteristics of a Siberian husky although she is alot larger than and average female. Tia knows basic obedience but can be a little boisterous at times so would suit a home with older children as she would knock toddlers over with her youthful exuberance.

She is still very puppy like in her behaviour and will need an owner to give her obedience training and regular exercise. Tia is calm when left on her own and is only vocal when it is food time. She gets on well with larger male dogs and would suit a home with another dog for company although she would be fine as an only dog as well.

Tia is available for the adoption fee of $350 which includes microhipping, vaccinations, worming, desexeing and lifetime registration. Please contact her foster carer for a suitable time to meet her.

Zeke

* ZEKE HAS A NEW HOME !!*

Zeke is a grey and white male pure bred Siberian Husky, born on 3
October 2003.

Zeke was impounded at Renbury (a western Sydney Council Dog Pound) and
no owner or new home turned up before he ran out of days there. He was
reprieved by Husky Rescue and came to us here for fostering.

Zeke is a long coat or woolly Siberian Husky. He is a purebred dog,
with a genetic recessive of having a long and extremely fine coat;
similar to that of a Collie. This is not common, but turns up in most
kennels occasionally.

You can read about woolly Siberian Huskies here:

http://www.huskycolors.com/wooly.html

The picture below is of Zeke after we spent 5 hours clipping, combing
and bathing him on Saturday 12 December - the day after he arrived.
His lovely long coat will grow back in time for winter - but right now
he looks quite a sight!

Through all the years of rescuing Huskies out of Dog Pounds we have not
found a Husky as badly matted, knotted and filthy as Zeke was. Our
priority was to get this dog clean and comfortable, and the effort
involved was long and hard - on him as well as on us!

Underneath the mud, the smell and the filth was found a way too thin
(every rib can be easily felt!) dog with little muscling, a dog who is a
bit unsteady on his feet and who needs rest initially, coupled with good
food and steady exercise to build up his fitness levels and restore him
to a bouncing good health. Being 6 years old does not help, and we can
hope that when he accepts his changed fortune he will turn a corner to
be bright and eager.

Throughout his ordeal Zeke was friendly and calm, accepted all the
grooming and clipping, and showed that he is a naturally good natured
dog with a sweet and accepting temperament - a dog with the potential
to become a great companion with a lot of love to give the family who
takes him in.

PLEASE DO NOT consider this dog unless you have the time and are
prepared to comb him through for 10 minutes daily, and for longer once a
week. A woolly Siberian Husky has an extra long coat with a higher need
for grooming than the usual Husky double coat. Scissoring around the
feet and groin to keep that fur short and clean will be needed, and when
Zeke sheds, the time factor will more than double.

A failure on the part of his new owners to groom him frequently will
result in Zeke looking like he did when he first arrived here.

*This is a warning we urge you to take seriously*

 It is not fair to
any dog to be neglected to the point where his fur is matted, knotted
and tangled, where mud and grime is so ingrained that it needs to be
clipped off at skin level.

Currently located near Canberra, your enquiries are welcome.

Zeke goes on a 4 week trial initially to see how he settles in with your
family.

He is neutered, vaccinated, wormed and micro-chipped and needs a lot of
TLC (tender loving care) to help him become well and happy again

*Available for $ 300 to cover transport, grooming, Vet work and Pound fees*

Alaska

- On Trial Period 30 Jan 10 -

This handsome boy is Alaska, a 4y.o. purebred black and white Siberian husky male who was surrendered to rescue in September when his owner moved house. Alaska has an impressive and distinctive look, with one brown eye and one parti-coloured eye - meaning he has both brown and blue colouring in one eye. This is perfectly normal for huskies and does not affect their vision at all.

Alaska is vaccinated, desexed, micro-chipped, lifetime registered, and is in good health. He is located in Wahroonga NSW 2076 and is available for $250 which will be used to cover his rescue and care costs, and help re-home other dogs in need.

Alaska absolutely loves going outside for walks, and in fact enjoys running and pulling you along on a bike. His powerful upper body makes him an ideal sledding husky, and he has been to sledding events in NSW before. Like almost every husky in Australia, he will pull strongly on lead unless his new owner takes the time to teach him loose-leash walking. In a few training sessions with his foster carer, Alaska has made great progress and has been on some long hikes around suburban streets.

Alaska is used to being both an indoor and an outdoor dog, and is housetrained and will only go to the toilet outside. He responds well to commands and rules… however he is a bit cheeky and will test your resolve before following your requests. He is looking for a new owner with an active lifestyle, who will also allow him indoors to be part of family life. Alaska does not have a reputation for chewing, digging or destroying things, but would still need help from his new owner to learn the rules at his new home about what objects he’s allowed to play with.

Even though Alaska looks powerful he really loves people and is gentle with them. He has a loveable and kind personality, and enjoys playing with anyone who will give him the time. Alaska has had some training and knows commands such as Out, Sit, Shake, Down and (most of the time) Come. Alaska isn’t used to having people’s hands in his food bowl while he’s eating and so needs to be shown that guarding food isn’t necessary. His foster carer will show you lots of simple tricks that can get him out of this habit in just a few weeks.

Alaska enjoys playing with other medium or large dogs and is friendly towards them. He is used to living with a canine companion, but having one in his new home is not a requirement. Alaska would not suit a home with small dogs though and unfortunately is not available to homes with cats or other small pets because huskies generally do not get on with them.

Alaska can tend to cry for a minute or two when you first leave the house - as if you forgotten him, but after a while he gets used to your routine and doesn’t make any noise. He does just fine in urban areas and his occasional howl has never distsurbed neighbours, and in fact the soulful call of huskies is something most people love about the breed. Alaska needs to be kept in a yard secured by sturdy 6 foot fences or he could escape and just keep running. If he got out he would be almost impossible to catch. Alaska is content with being confined to a yard however and has not shown any real desire (or ability) to escape, unlike some huskies.

To find out more about Alaska or arrange a time to meet him, please contact his foster carer:

   Sascha

Sascha is a lovely little grey and white Siberian husky. She is about 4 years old and has been desexed, microchipped and lifetime registered. She is available for adoption immediately for a donation of $300 that will help cover her rescue costs, and she is located in Tweed Heads NSW 2485 (near QLD border).

Sascha was recently surrendered at a pound by her owner as being too boisterous for their 4 year old child. Sascha has been in foster care since the start of August and has shown herself to be remarkably settled. At her foster home she has a 3 year old child to interact with, and while she does like playing and gets excited, she just needs guidance as to how to behave (i.e. she needs some training) and she is fine.   She loves going for walks and being young and healthy she would need one every day. She is not immediately sociable with other dogs, so she would suit an only-dog home, or one that is experienced in introducing a new dog to the household. She is fantastic with people and has absolutely no problems there.
Sascha has been through quite a bit and as is often the case where dogs have been through the pound, she needs a little time to settle down again. As with all huskies she is not suited to a home that has cats, small dogs or other small pets, even though she has not caused any problems to date with the cat at her foster home.

Sascha is best suited to an active family that has someone home a fair bit of the time, and enjoys spending time outdoors in the yard with their dog. Her family would need to walk her regularly and take her to dog training classes to help her learn proper manners. She needs a fully fenced yard with 6 foot colourbond or paling fences.  If you think Sascha might suit your family, please contact her foster carer for more information or to arrange a time to meet her.

The dogs listed below are being re-homed by their owners.  Whilst the registration details of each dog have been verified with council records, the accuracy of descriptions provided for each dog cannot be guaranteed.  Husky Rescue recommends organising a time to meet with the owner and their dog, before considering adoption, as trial periods may not be available in all cases. Please note that ages listed may be an estimate.

Kiska

This is Kiska (pronounced Kishka), she was born in September 2003, and so is 7 years old. She is a beautiful silver/gray pure bred husky with one brown and one blue eye and is microchipped, desexed and is up to date with all her vaccinations and worming.

We have had Kiska since she was 8 weeks old and she is a very well loved family pet. However 5 years ago we had to relocate to Darwin for work reasons and while we have tried to do everything we can to make her comfortable she is not coping well with the heat. We have decided to find her a new home in a cooler climate.

Kiska is completely house trained and would prefer a home where she has lots of indoor privileges. She can be left alone inside all day while you are at work and will not touch anything inside the house, she will wait for you to come and let her out to toilet. She loves being outdoors as well so a big yard would be a plus, in fact a big, fenced, property would be ideal because she loves to run, however she is not active all day and enjoys lying around the house most of the time, but a nice walk every day will be enough to keep her fit and happy.

Kiska has a very loving easy-going personality and get along with all dogs and people, so a home with other similar sized dogs won't be a problem. While she has a Maltese as a friend huskies do not generally get along well with small dogs or small pets so we don’t recommend she go to a home with them. She is not food aggressive, does not chew and does not suffer from separation anxiety. However she gets a little frightened with big storms and if she is outside will try to escape so a yard with six foot fencing and gates is essential to keep her safe.

She loves when you come home from work and will let you know by howling until you say hello back and give her a pat. She is great around kids (with supervision) and unfamiliar people. She is not a very shy dog and is completely trustworthy as she has never shown any aggression or inclination to bite.

Kiska would be very happy in a home where she can be an active part of the family-ie an indoor home, but where she has plenty of space to run and explore when she is outside.

Kiska is available for $300 which will go to Husky Rescue which will go toward helping other dogs in need. We are happy to cover any transport costs, if an interstate home is found we will be happy to fly down with her to hand her over to the new family.

If you would like to find out more about Kiska please call
Maria Milatos 0439 847 584 or email: carolinapfp@hotmail.com

KISKA IS LOCATED IN DARWIN, NT.

SHE IS AVAILABLE FOR INTERSTATE REHOMING TO THE RIGHT FAMILY

Pepa

Meet Pepa, a pure bred brown and white Siberian husky female, aged 8 years. She has been part of a great family in Balmain Sydney but due to unforseen circumstances they need to downsize to an apartment.

So Pepa is now looking for a new family home where she can enjoy lots of indoor privileges and be a normal part of everyday family life. She is desexed, micro chipped, vaccinated, heart wormed and all-wormed, is in the peak of health with no medical problems.

Pepa has a wonderfully easy-going personality and is a really social girl who gets along with everyone, dogs and people alike. She is striking looking and has a luxurious coat which is the very characteristic of the breed, underneath that fine coat she is a softie at heart.

This very special girl is house trained and has proved her completely trustworthy indoors. She is not food aggressive, does not dig, does not chew, and shows absolutely no separation anxiety.

Pepa is at least partly obedience trained but doesn’t know too many tricks but loves to see you when you get home, Pepa has laid back energy levels which mean she would settle well into an older home, and she will almost certainly get along with any other existing dogs.

She is a talker and enjoys having long conversations with you, particularly around meal time. Most importantly Pepa has shown that she has a soft mouth and no inclination to bite at all.

Her new home would need to have secure six foot fences to keep her safe and, as with all huskies, she would not be suited to home with cats and other small pets. Pepas new family would need to be committed to training her and taking her for daily walks.

Pepa deserves a very special and caring indoor home, and will prove that she can settle in almost instantly and quickly become a regular piece of the furniture.

To find out more about Pepa or to arrange to meet her, please contact her Balmain Sydney family on the below number,

Vicki Richards 0414 376 040 (preferred)

Chloey

Beautiful Chloey was raised by a couple whom regularly walked her or should i say she walked them, took her to on lead dog training, let her off at the local river to run around and chase the ducks. This was one spoilt dog.

Chloey was never an indoor dog due to her furry coat, she didn’t mind being outdoors in fact she use to love sleeping on the outdoor glass table, or relaxing on the grass in the sun.  Unfortunately her owners have done some renovations to their house bringing Chloeys living space restricted to  an in closed pool area which has no grass. Due to the couple having now 2 young boys, Chloeys walking time has been reduced, leaving her crying for attention, as she loves to live an active lifestyle.

Chloey does  not have a reputation for chewing or destroying clothes, or digging holes, although she loves an old shoe to rip around and to play with, after a walk she will help herself to the pool.

Chloey was born in June 2004 making her 5 ½  years old. She has been raised with babies, She is very hospitable around children and adults,  She loves company, She would suit an only dog home as this is all she has ever had. Chloey has socialised with other dogs at parks and outdoors and just likes to have a sniff and chase them. Chloey has never jumped fences to escape, she will need a secure fence at least 6 foot height to keep her safe.

Chloey is  a healthy female friendly, de sexed, micro chipped, regular vaccinations, worming and has no medical history, one brown one blue eye. Chloey knows her commands sit, drop, roll, shake, heel.
Chloey is lovable and kind and would adapt to a home with someone who can dedicate the time for her regular walking/ grooming. She will be great  around young children.

Chloe is located in Chipping Norton NSW and is availabe now for a $200 donation to Husky Rescue.

If you would like to find out more about Chloey or arrange to meet her please contact
Katherine 0405 181 746
