A puppy mill or puppy farm is a large dog breeding facility created to mass produce puppies for profit.

Likened to battery hens, the breeding dogs are kept in cages or pens for their entire life with the sole purpose of producing puppies for the pet shop, internet and overseas markets.

Pet shops require a constant supply of cute, young puppies and individual shops can take more than 20 a week. Multiply that by the number of pet shops found in shopping centres throughout Australia and you have the perfect distribution network for an industry producing hundreds of puppies with little concern paid to quality, health or temperament.

 Stop Puppy Mills

Hundreds of thousands of puppies are mass-bred each year for sale in pet shops or through web sites and newspaper classifieds. Help the HSUS spread the word about puppy mills with two freely downloadable fliers, "How to Find a Good Dog Breeder" and "How to Buy a Puppy"

Maple

Meet Maple, a 3 ½ year old black and white female Siberian husky with brown eyes who was saved from euthanasia at a Sydney pound by Husky Rescue, and who is now looking for a brand new start in a new home.

Maple is vaccinated, de-sexed, microchipped, lifetime registered, up to date with worming and other medications and has no known medical conditions.  She is available immediately for $350 which will go towards the cost of her care and vet bills.  Maple is located in Douglas Park 2569, in Sydney's south west, and is available for a trial period to make sure she'll settle in with your family.  Maple comes with an information pack when she's adopted, which includes care and training advice, and free help is available through Husky Rescue for any questions an adopter might have, at any time.

Maple loves people and is a bit of a gentle giant.  She's on the taller side for a husky (so it's possible she has some mixed breeding in her past) but she's calm and patient when needed and will happily sit for pats and for her dinner.  She isn't given to hyperactivity or the 'zoomies' but as a healthy adult female she still has lots of energy if needed.  Her new home will need to offer her entertaining toys to play with and provide regular walks to keep her happy and healthy.

Maple would suit a household that has no other dogs or pets, especially no small pets such as mice, rabbits, birds – or cats.  Maple is about average when it comes to meeting other dogs, so time and patience is recommended if she's to be introduced to any canine playmates in her new neighbourhood.

Maple has proved to be a very quiet dog who would be ideal for indoor family life, and is not at all inclined to be a noisemaker or destructive, and has been fine with being left alone for periods of time outdoors.  She has also proved to be housetrained while in foster care and her new owner will just need to show her where to toilet for the first week or so to continue this while she settles in.

It's unlikely Maple has had obedience training in her past, but she does respond to basic commands like Sit and Come.  Her new home will need to continue her training using dog-friendly methods, and in particular learn how to teach her not to pull on lead.  Training advice is available on request.

To find out more about Maple, or to arrange a time to meet her, please contact her foster carer.

The dogs listed below are being re-homed by their owners.  Whilst the registration details of each dog have been verified with council records, the accuracy of descriptions provided for each dog cannot be guaranteed.  Husky Rescue recommends organising a time to meet with the owner and their dog, before considering adoption, as trial periods may not be available in all cases. Please note that ages listed may be an estimate.

 Bella

Meet the lovely, sweet Bella, a gentle and loving medium-sized pure bred black and white Siberian husky female, aged 8. She has lovely clear deep amber eyes. She is looking for a new home due to a change in family circumstances and needs a kind and loving family where she can enjoy lots of indoor time and be a part of the family group.

She is fully house-trained, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, heart wormed and all wormed, is in excellent health with no medical problems and is available for a suggested donation of $150 to Husky Rescue which will be used to help other dogs in need. She also has current rabies vaccination (necessary only for travel to the UK and EU).

Bella has a gentle adaptable personality with that energetic husky spark when a run or playtime is offered. She knows simple commands such as sit, down, stay, come, and “take it” when food or a meal is offered. She loves toys and is often happy to amuse herself with ropes, kongs, and rubber balls. She enjoys finding a nice spot in the sun or a quiet corner to have a nap. She is pretty good with being left alone, but prefers canine companionship and sometimes likes to wriggle under the fence so she can play with the big dogs next door. Her new home must be fully fenced and secure as Bella is the kind of dog who loves to run and can be difficult to catch if she was to get out. Fences should be secure at ground level in particular; Bella has occasionally dug under an unsecured fence if there is something on the other side that seems interesting.

It is essential that we find a stable and committed home for Bella and after years of daily cuddles, affection and exercise, she is very trusting, and needs someone who can show her the rules in her new house without intimidation or punishment. She enjoys life when she has positive leadership, as she has lovely manners and never makes demands, preferring to be submissive and relaxed.

As with most huskies Bella’s new home would need to have no small dogs or animals, and preferably be able to provide lots of human or canine companionship. Her new family would need to be committed to daily walks and exercise as well as a training program to keep her happy and healthy, and help her fit into fit into her new family from day one.

Bella would be ideal with older or teenage children who could take her on walks and a home that has previous experience with huskies is preferred.

Bella is currently located near Geelong VIC and is available immediately.

Chubby

Please meet Chubby, a fun loving gentle pure breed wolf grey Siberian husky male, 3 years of age. Due to the relocation of several family members abroad, Chubby is in need of a loving family where he can enjoy lots of indoor privileges and be part of the pack.

He is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, heart wormed and all wormed, is in the peak of his health with no medical problems and is available for a $300 donation to Husky Rescue which will be used to help other dogs in need. Chubby has a wonderfully easy going personality with an abundance of youthful energy. He is extremely playful and gets along with everyone, dogs and people alike.
Although his size and striking looks may be imposing, his is a softie and rather submissive.

This friendly giant is house trained and knows simple commands such as sit, down, hand, stay and come. Chubby understands toys quite well and can keep himself amused with stuffed kongs, rawhide chewies, rubber balls and rope toys. He’s quite good with being left alone, but like most young dogs would probably enjoy a bit of a dig in the yard if given the chance. His new home must be fully fenced and secure as Chubby is the kind of dog who would not stop running and be impossible to catch if he were to ever get out. The fences and gates need to be 6 foot high to keep Chubby safe and the gate latches secure as huskies tend to work out how to open the “gravity type” latches fairly quickly.

As with all huskies Chubbys new home would need to have no small dogs nor any small “pocket pets”. His new family would need to be committed to daily walks and exercise as well as a training program to keep him happy and healthy and help him fit into fit into his new family from day one.

Chubby would be ideal with older or teenage children who could take him on walks and a home that has previous experience with dogs is preferred.

Chubby is located in Oatley and is available immediately. To find out more about Chubby or to arrange to meet him please call Billy:
